I intend to explore the use of procedures in creating design work. Set up some rules, then do what the rules say and see what happens. No idea what will come out at the end, no responsibility.

Exploring design with Mathematica

Conditional Design Manifesto

Keith Tyson - The Artmachine:
The Artmachine is a procedure devised by Keith Tyson as a means to undermine or question the modern emphasis on the importance of the individual artist's voice. It is an algorithm or precise sequence of specific instructions which, given an initial state, generate a final outcome in the form of a proposal for an artwork. Whereas what is fed into, say, a mathematical algorithm would be a numerical value, Tyson took the world and everything in it as his database of potential starting point.
Depending on what was fed into its complex, layered stages, each iteration of the Artmachine led to an outcome quite unlike any other. Tyson was thus set the problem of deciding how to realise the final instructions presented to him by the Artmachine - an executive rather than creative role. Inevitably, some iterations ended in outcomes that were impossible to execute, but rather than simply being discarded, those 'failures' remain part of the Artmachine series as not-yet-realised proposals. They also prompted Tyson to make refinements to the algorithm, removing stages and introducing others to incorporate new variables. Taken together, the Artmachine's wide diversity of results defies the notion of a coherent artistic style.
